Miles Jesu opens health care clinic in Lviv, Ukraine
New Clinic in LvivBy Dr. Andrej Malik, MJAfter going on my first medical mission, i would like to share with my brothers and sisters my first experience as a Soldier of Jesus. Dr. Pavel Zvak, Dr. Tomas Jedlika, pharmacist Eric Gladkowski and myself ? members of the Miles Jesu Epiphany Medical Missions ? went to Lviv, Ukraine to found a clinic for the poor.Because of high unemployment, corruption, low salaries, large emigration, many destroyed families, and alcoholism, the social situation in Ukraine ? a former Soviet bloc- country ? is very difficult.The situation in health care is similar.
There is practically no health insurance in Ukraine. To visit a doctor is very expensive and many people cannot afford it. People who need an operation have to buy their own supplies like sewing material, disinfectant, antibiotics, braces, bandages, etc. They also have to pay a lot of money for an operation. The prices of medicines are too high for most people, and that's why many suffer for years from easily treatable illnesses like high blood pressure, heart problems, and stomach ulcers.
I never imagined that conditions would be so poor there. Here is one example of the poor we helped while opening the clinic in Lviv: a 30 year old mother of twins ? Yuriy and Julia ? both 5 years old. The children have heavy asthma from their first year. They have been hospitalized 8 to 12 times. The father left the family 2 years ago and the state support for the children adds up to only $30 a month.
The children's medications alone cost $50 a month. We gave their mother some of the medications the children needed. There are hundreds of thousands of examples more terrible than this in the Ukraine. That is why we founded this charitable clinic for the poor in Ukraine.Part of our mission was to find Ukrainian doctors who could continue to help at the clinic. We were able to find several doctors from different fields of medicine who agreed to volunteer their time during the week at the clinic.
Because of this, mothers like the one we helped will continue to find help at the clinic. The clinic is also close to the soup kitchen Miles Jesu operates in Lviv. Many of the people who are fed at the soup kitchen will also be helped by the clinic. We would like to develop the clinic step by step until we are able to have a Catholic hospital in Lviv. The medical mission in Ukraine was my first missionary experience and i am very thankful to Our Lord who has called me to Miles Jesu to do this important work.
It is a noble mission to work for poor people and bring them hope. Can you imagine how beautiful it is to see their reaction to our care for them? They always give thanks to God and are very grateful. Since joining Miles Jesu, i have begun to see how true it is that when we give our lives to God, we receive a hundred times more in this life. I would especially like to thank those who are helping our medical missions with their prayers, materials and financial support. Please continue supporting us and God will generously reward you.
